ACWE is the hub of MMU schools outreach work in the areas of creative writing, reading and English. Our aim is to support schools and colleges in taking a creative approach to all aspects of the English curriculum but focusing particularly on creative writing and reading.

We work closely with Aimhigher NW to provide a programme of events for pupils in primary and secondary schools and colleges – both bespoke visit and writing days and through projects like Higher Futures 4 U. We are also able to cost bespoke events for schools on request. Contact k.tew@mmu.ac.uk

Our activities for secondary pupils (Y9 – 13) focus on a free-to-enter annual creative writing competition for 14-18 year olds. This is now in its fifth year with entries welcome annually from January – July. Each year we select around 60 pieces of writing, which are published in our annual All Write anthology. To date we have published the work of around 240 young writers. Winning pupils are presented with copies of the anthology at a December celebration event by writers such as Melvin Burgess, Sherry Ashworth, Mandy Coe and Anjum Malik who support our outreach programme.

We also provide support for teachers, librarians and freelance writers via a programme of Masters-level short courses. These are hosted by the Department of English and the Department of Information and Commununications.

Membership of ACWE is free to all. Since its launch in April 2005, over 500 individuals have joined ACWE. Our members include English teachers and librarians from over 300 schools and colleges from across the North West of England and beyond, LEA Advisors from 12 Local Education Authorities and many freelance writers and writing students who are interested in working in education. We also welcome our many international members.
