Department of Languages: Evening Classes

If you are a student, staff or member of the public wishing to learn a new language or brush up on your existing language skills in your free time then these courses are for you.

Which languages are on offer?

We currently offer ten week language courses in the following languages:

  • Arabic
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Mandarin Chinese
  • Spanish
  • Urdu

If the language you are interested in is not on this list, please let us know; we will try to offer additional languages in future subject to demand.

When will the course run?

The next courses start in the Spring term, on the week commencing Monday 22nd February 2010. Courses will run for a total of ten weeks, with a four-week break between the 20th March and the 18th April for the Easter vacation. Courses will finish the week beginning 24th May 2010, apart from Monday classes, which will finish on Monday 7th June due to the Bank Holidays in May.

Each class will be one and a half hours long. Classes will start at 6pm and finish at 7.30pm.

Where can I do these classes?

We offer classes at both our All Saints (city centre) campus and our Didsbury campus.

What will the course involve?

The focus of these classes is to develop practical communication skills. You will mainly be given speaking and listening tasks in class although there may also be some tasks involving reading and writing. You will be given a course outline at the start of your course and your progress over the course will be closely supervised by your tutor and supported by regular short homework tasks. A course book will be recommended for you to buy prior to the start of the course but is not compulsory.

How much does it cost?

Each course costs £105.

A concessionary rate of £85 is available to the following groups:

  • Manchester Metropolitan University staff and students
  • Senior citizens
  • Unwaged workers

You will be required to provide documentary evidence of this concessionary status when you enrol.

Which level should I apply for?

Classes will be offered at a variety of levels: Beginners, Post Beginners, Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate. Please see the descriptions below to help you decide which level would be appropriate for you.

Beginners

These courses are for people with no prior knowledge of the language. By the end of the course you will be able to communicate in a range of simple everyday situations and you will have developed a basic knowledge of the structure and vocabulary of the language.

Post Beginners

These courses are for people who have completed a beginners' course or who may have studied the language at school some years ago. You will have some understanding of basic structures and vocabulary. The course will help you to develop confidence in a wider range of topics and situations.

Pre Intermediate

These courses are for people who have completed a post beginners' course or for people who know some of the language but are not yet confident enough for the Intermediate course. This course will prepare you for the Intermediate course.

Intermediate

You will have a reasonable foundation in the language, to GCSE level or equivalent. The course will develop your knowledge of the language further, introducing a wider range of structures and tenses.

Post Intermediate

You will have a good working knowledge of the language and will be able to deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. There will be a focus on conversation in this class, and you will learn to discuss ideas and present opinions in a developed way.

How do I enrol?

Enrolment forms will be available to download from mid-December 2009. In the meantime you can register your interest by contacting the Language Courses team at the contact details below. We will then send you an enrolment form once it is ready. The deadline for enrolments will be Friday 5th February 2010. Full joining details will be sent to you at least 7 days prior to the course. This will be done via the e-mail address you have provided; if you do not have an e-mail address we will contact you via post.

Please note that places on courses are limited and are booked on a first-come first-served basis, so we advise you to book early to avoid disappointment. Courses may be cancelled if demand is not sufficient to run the course.

How do I pay?

Payment can be made in one of three ways:

  • By Cheque

Complete the enrolment form and return it with a cheque for the correct fee, made payable to Manchester Metropolitan University.

  • By credit card

Fill in your credit card details on the enrolment form and send it back. We can accept the following credit cards: Visa/Maestro/Mastercard/Delta.

  • By Invoice

We can invoice your company if you give us an official order; please attach this to your enrolment form.

  • By internal transfer (only for MMU staff if your department has agreed to cover the cost of your course)

Refunds and Cancellations

Cancellations are permitted up to 10 days before the start of a course, subject to a £25 cancellation fee. Refunds will not be made for cancellations less than 10 days before the start of a course unless we are able to fill the place with another student. Inability to attend due to illness, personal or professional commitments does not entitle you to a refund; however in such cases we will consider all the circumstances and take such action as we consider to be fair and reasonable.

Cancellation by Us

All courses have minimum attendance levels and may be subject to cancellation in situations where insufficient bookings are received. Whilst we make every effort to avoid this situation, should it arise you will be entitled to a full refund of any fees paid or have the option to transfer onto a different course. We will not be held liable however for any other losses incurred as a consequence.
In the unlikely circumstances that an individual class has to be postponed due to staff illness or any other reason for which we are responsible, we will make every reasonable effort to reschedule or add the missed hours onto the remaining classes in the course. Where this causes difficulty, you are encouraged to contact us to discuss options.
