Whitbread winner joins creative team

Poet and dramatist Michael Symmons Roberts has joined MMU's Department of English as a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing.

One of Britain's outstanding writers, Michael is the author of Corpus, a prize-winning collection of poetry and Patrick's Alphabet, a novel recently published by Jonathan Cape.

Corpus, his fourth book of poems, won the Whitbread Award and was short listed for the TS Eliot Prize.

Michael's first novel Patrick's Alphabet, which echoes his own first-hand experience of the Hungerford Massacre, is described as "disturbing and unsettling, and lingers long in the mind," by the Daily Mail.

Radio and Opera

A regular broadcaster and Guardian reviewer, Michael's association with composer James MacMillan has led to two BBC Proms choral commissions, a song cycle and a new opera for the Welsh National Opera.

His work for radio includes A Fearful Symmetry - for Radio 4 - which won the Sandford St Martin Prize, and Last Words commissioned by Radio 4 to mark the first anniversary of 9/11.

The Preston-born writer has taught on the online Master's degree at MMU's Writing School.

Writing School academic director Andrew Biswell said: "Michael is a superb addition to our team. He will be working across a number of forms to develop our strong provision in undergraduate and postgraduate writing programmes."
